OEM or ODM: where should your project begin?
Start with the product you need, the decisions you have already made, and the development support you are looking for.
Start with your brief
Describe your product category, target market, expected order quantity and launch window. Include any existing design files and essential features. These details make an initial discussion useful.
Define the development scope
OEM and ODM are used differently across suppliers. Agree explicitly on who owns the product design, engineering, tooling, software, testing and manufacturing responsibilities. Branding an existing model and developing a new product require different work.
Confirm before production
Record the agreed configuration, approved sample, packaging, acceptance criteria and commercial terms. Confirm intellectual property and tooling ownership in the project agreement.
